Comparison and Contrasting features of DV8 and Pina Bausch-

Throughout this report i am going to be discussing the comparisons that Pina Bausch and DV8 have in both their style, themes and work they produce. 

The style used within Pina  Bausch work is modern/post modern Dance Theatre. Pina Bausch likes to portray emotion and feeling rather then a story which is similar to DV8  although within DV8 they use the style of Physical Theatre who explores challenging topics and taboo subject both culturally, socially and politically, the main goal for the end of the performance  is to connect with the audience members and allow them to think about topical issues and engage with their feelings and emotions. Pina Bausch uses her themes to do this, but rather than use other peoples experiences, she concentrated on her own childhood and life experiences and also that of her dancers.  

Both Pina Bausch and DV8 explore the feelings of the audience the ways in how they do this may differ however they are still aiming for the same thing, which is to create a connection with the work on stage to the life of people in the audience.

 In Dv8 performances they takes risks and breaks boundaries in order to connect with life issues. One example of this is in his productions to be straight with you and cost of living. In the cost of living he uses a man that has no legs which was majorly unusual during this time period and in to be straight with you he speaks about important things like sexuality, culture religion and all touchy subjects  that people may relate to but could be to scared to talk to people about it so he does it for them in order to communicate and let them know that they can feel comfortable being who they want to be. Similar to in café muller and rite of spring where  Pina Bausch portrays emotion rather then a story she does this by using real life expressions and by letting the dancers use there past to help them express there emotion for example she made her dancers look into things like fear and past trauma  as she wanted to see those relationships as she felt it made her dancers  dance better.

Another similarity Pina Bausch and dv8 have within there work is how they get there dancers to dance with meaning. Pina Bausch pushed her performers out of there comfort zones by physically demanding them to do things like dancing with there eyes closed, she made her  dancers dance with there eyes closed so they  couldn't feel embarrassed as there was no one there to see them make all these unusual moves and gestures and therefore they were able to dance with more passion and feeling. Pina Bausch used to  get her dancers to dance to exhaustion to the point they where  so tired they could no longer dance anymore she done this to prove a point that they become more dedicated the more they go over things.

Eclectic style-

Both practitioners pina Bausch and dv8 use a range of styles.pina Bausch dance style is modern/postmodern as she wanted to depart from the traditional style of ballet and consider deeper things like emotion.pina once said “I am not so much intersected by how people move but what moves them”which indicates how she preferred the more touchy dance pieces with sharp and physically demanding movement.

Collaboration-

In 2009, Bausch started to collaborate with film director Wim  Wenders on a 3D documentary.she also worked with someone called Paul Taylor working on a piece called “tablet”where pina Bausch was in one of the 4 dances created by Paul taylor.dv8 has a collaboration with Wendy’s Houstoun, the central character, Lauren Potter and Jordi Cortes Molina, exquisite movers both; Nigel Charnock who displays his extraordinary verbal dexterity; and four newcomers — the singer Melanie Pappenheim, the dancers Kate Champion and Dale Tanner, and 64-year-old Diana Payne-Myers.

Devices-

Pina Bausch used many devices within her performances She introduced chaotic speech elements, with the dancers calling out seemingly random phrases.they both use a lot of devices like repetition, unison, fragmentation,,individual dancers and episodic moments within.they down this to make themselves stand out.
