In dv8s style he used very taboo topics and described them while using physical theatre while taking risks to demonstrate there feeling. This contradicts to the normal style of dance around this time era. For example in the cost of living they used a man with no legs which was very unusual around this time.In to be straight with you they used a very powerful subject to ingage the audience and to let them know that they should express there feelings about there culture, sexuality and beliefs.
Dv8 report-
DV8 was formed in 1986 by a collection of dancers who had become frustrated by the direction of contemporary dance at the time.dv8 used the style of physical theatre and the main goal was to take risks and use touchy subjects that may differ to over people’s opinions, their aim was to break down barriers between dance, theatre and personal politics and above all communicating ideas and feelings clearly and unpretentiously.dv8s end goal was to connect with the worlds feelings they wanted to show that even though there focus on stage was in the body and their physical movement the real focus that they are trying to connect with is you they do this by using dance, acting, circus , film or whatever the message relates to the most. Some techniques used by dv8 are dialogue, soundscapes, physical theatre and music and dance in order to build and emotional story for a character. Since 1987, DV8 has commissioned set designers and living composers for its works, helping investigate the relationship between body, architecture and music. The focus of the creative approach is on reinvesting dance with meaning, particularly where this has been lost through formalised techniques. Thematically, DV8 insists on the importance of challenging our preconceptions of what dance can, and should, address.
As a class we then done a workshop to see what we had taken from dv8s style. In this workshop I explored the combination of physical theatre, movement ,gesture prop and vocal.Just like dv8 we explored a touchy subject we explored a topical issue of the arrest of Rosa parks in 1995 to coincide with today’s campaign of Black Lives Matter.this is really prominent as we are celebrating black history month. We used style and techniques of dv8 to combined art forms to create thought provoking factual scenes.
Rosa parks performance piece created from dv8 style-
Honey, throughout the practical workshops I can clearly see that you have worked hard to understand the different styles and conventions the 3 different practitioners we looked at. You were able in your blog to describe their style, and how they can be considered a combined arts practitioner or company. Within each video and blog post, I can see that you can identify and perform as well as describe how they use a range of techniques within their professional pieces and you had clearly demonstrated these in your videos. You have also described the effective ways they combine elements together to create their pieces of professional work. Your confidence in your practical workshop performance grew each week and I am very pleased with your practical ability to display the conventions of each practitioner.
